Born in Germany in 1971, Torsten Meyer has lived and worked in New York City since 2006 after he met his future wife at the infamous punk rock club CBGBs in 2001. Over the course of 20 years his deeply rooted interest in underground culture found creative outlets in promoting D.I.Y. shows at cultural centers in the 90’s, as well as in contributing to print magazines in Germany and the United States. For over 15 years, both ‘Trust Magazine’ and ‘Maximum Rock and Roll’ have treated his articles as cover stories. Even though organizing shows and supporting artists through fanzines were/are important pastimes, Torsten’s true passion continues to be the process of capturing visual aspects of below the radar and avant-garde sound. Since the late 80’s he has experimented with semi- and fully professional Sony cameras in various ways, most recently under the moniker UN:ART:IG.
Torsten is not a hired gun. He primarily shoots what fascinates him from the bottom of his heart, and let’s just say glossy entertainment industry types aren’t it. The main focus of his work is to push the boundaries of live music videography, and not the painful and tiresome process of filmmaking itself. None of his work is offered for sale but screened world wide instead on a free admission basis.
UN:ART:IG’s work has been exhibited in London, Paris, New York City, Reykjavik, Australia, China and even in places as far flung as South East Asia. When asked why he shoots, the Bushwick, Brooklyn resident will most likely respond with the most simple but honest answer: “Because I like doing it”.
